WHAT IS MESOTHELIOMA ?
Mesothelioma is derived from the name of the cells, mesothelium, that help organs in their movement. The mesothelial cells are the those that add a protective lining or protective fluid that surrounds and cushions the organs. It is this special fluid that assists the organs in their everyday movement.
There is a cancerous mesothelioma also known as malignant mesothelioma, and a non-cancerous mesothelioma also known as benign mesothelioma. Between 70 and 80 percent of mesothelioma cases are from asbestos exposure. The remaining evidence of mesothelioma cases are linked to radiation from x-rays which used thorotrast and is no longer in use, and from the SV40 virus which was used in polio vaccines in the mid 1950's to early 1960's. It is not yet determined that the SV40 virus causes mesothelioma but research is being conducted to confirm this. The difficulty in diagnosing any type of mesothelioma is that it is latent and may not appear for up to 50 years after exposure. There are three main tumor types of malignant mesothelioma; epitheloid mesothelioma, sarcomatoid mesothelioma, and biphasic mesothelioma. The aforementioned are the types of cancerous tumor cells present in the infected area which is determined by the cell type when observed under a microscope i.e. epitheloid pleural mesothelioma. The most common area for mesothelioma to effect is the outer lining of the lungs, the next most common occurrence is the outer lining of the abdomen and in rare cases the outer lining around the heart. About 75 percent of mesothelioma's occur in the chest cavity; this type of mesothelioma is titled pleural mesothelioma; up to 20% of mesothelioma's occur in the abdomen area, these are titled peritoneal mesothelioma and mesothelioma's that start around the heart are very rare are titled pericardial mesothelioma.
